Degree Certificates

Issued by undergraduate and/or postgraduate institutions that applicants have attended and provide details about all qualifications attained.
We only accept certificates in English.

  • A master’s degree in a subject appropriate to the course of study to be followed(recommended)
  • An upper second-class honours degree from a UK or Japanese university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject
Academic transcripts Highest achieved qualification. Please remember to enclose an academic transcript or Diploma Supplement showing modules and marks for all years of study in English. If you are yet to complete your highest academic qualification, please could you submit an interim transcript (an up to date copy of your results so far) along with your next highest academic qualification if applicable)
Personal Statement PhD applicants should include details of working in relevant fields of your research experience and how the LSHTM/NU can contribute to your career plans. It is desirable to describe any experience and/or collaborations in Japan, if there is any (Max.1,500 words).
Research proposal You may either apply for a project from the project list, or you can apply with your own project idea. We strongly encourage the applicants to contact potential supervisor(s) when preparing a research proposal. If you are applying with your own project idea, please indicate that you have an approval of the potential supervisor(s). Applicants applying for 2 projects should only prepare a research proposal for their first choice.

All applicants are expected to submit a research proposal with their application.
The research proposal should not exceed 4 pages and should include:

  • Research/topic area
  • Specific research question(s)
  • Study design
  • Data collection method and analysis
  • Approximate research costs and planned funding source

Please be aware that the research proposal submitted with your application does not have to be the final research project: if and when you are offered a place, you will have the opportunity to refine your project through discussions with your supervisor.

The main purpose of the proposal is to demonstrate that you have the necessary critical thinking skills, an understanding of the relevant research area, and an appreciation of the demands of a Research Degree.

Relevant Professional Qualifications A qualification appropriate to the course of study to be followed, in medicine, dentistry, veterinary or pharmacy studies.
Evidence of English language ability

Band B (standard requirement)

  • IELTS (Academic) : 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each component
  • Pearson PTE Academic: 76 overall with 76 in each component

*These tests are only valid for 2 years. The English test score must have been completed no more than 2 years prior to enrolment. Prospective research students must meet above the English language requirements by the time of admission in
September 2024. If your current test is below these requirements, please contact the LSHTM Admissions team to discuss available options.

Desirable but NOT essential is knowledge of Japanese language Please provide, if any, level of knowledge of Japanese language in your personal statement.
Referee’s details If an applicant has studied in the last five years, he/she must include a referee who is an academic familiar with your work. If an applicant is currently or has recently been employed, then the second referee should be the applicant’s current/recent employer. Please provide your referees information in the Application form.
