経歴

I earned my M.D. as the Valedictorian at Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) in 1996. Then, I practiced as an intern doctor at the Infectious Diseases Department of Ho Chi Minh University of Medicine and Pharmacy and concurrently worked at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City until 1998. In 2002, I was awarded my PhD from the Kyoto Institute of Technology (Kyoto, Japan) by conducting a thesis on the antimalarial drugs’ mechanism. Between 2002 and 2007, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Kyoto Institute of Technology with a 2-year fellowship of JSPS. Since 2007, I have been working and teaching for Nagasaki University in a broad field of research, including clinical research, epidemiology, global/planetary health, digital health and medicine, ethical issues, education, research methodology, evidence-based medicine and health, and health intervention using various skill sets of biostatistics, data mining, survey, and systematic review and meta-analysis.

メッセージ

My teaching motto is: Anyone can do research and publish papers under the proper supervision”. I respect diversity and differences in learning styles, therefore, my teaching mainly focuses on conducting fundamental researches in different fields and types and learning from failure and success of each project. Should global students have difficulty finding a supervisor in particular fields at their respective institutions, my proven track record of experience in diverse fields of medicine and health enables me to facilitate the development of their ideas, study design, and research conduction.
In 2010, I established the Online Research Club (ORC), which is an online educational program specifically designed to meet the demand for the promotion of international students’ participation in various research projects. TMGH students and alumni can continuously connect with global students and share their knowledge and experience. Students and workers who lack research experience, as well as research experts, are all welcome to join the program by sending an email to tienhuy@nagasaki-u.ac.jp or requesting to join the Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/orc.howtodoresearch.
The online Facebook-based mentoring platform and research environment helps students explore the world of clinical research under the supervision of established researchers and enables new members to acquire the experience needed to conduct research with confidence and even get two publications after two years. Skills that students can learn from the ORC include developing a research idea, writing a protocol, collecting and managing data, advanced scientific writing, data analysis, cooperation, and leadership.
The ORC teaches student to conduct several real researches in different fields including:

    • Systematic review and meta-analysis
    • Global health, planetary health research
    • Clinical studies/epidemiology
    • Research methodological
  • Research ethics

Moreover, the ORC also contributes to several global community and society activities such as:

  • Cooperating with global suicide prevention service
  • Cooperating with local community NPO UNIVERSALAID.JP
  • Serving as editors and reviewers for journals
  • Helping countries’ COVID-19 prevention
